ZIMBABWE – HARARE – MDC Youth Assembly Chairman and deputy Youth Minister, Thamsanqa Mahlangu, who was arrested on Tuesday on allegations of stealing a cellphone, was on Thursday remanded in custody to Friday when a bail ruling will be made.
Harare Magistrate Kudakwashe Njerambini will make a bail ruling on the case Friday morning after he said he wanted time to go through the submissions of the State and defence lawyers.
Mahlangu and his aide, Malven Chadamoyo who was also remanded in custody are being accused of stealing a Nokia 2310 cell phone belonging to self-styled war veteran leader, Joseph Chinotimba on 17 July.
Meanwhile Chinotimba has filed a land mark lawsuit of US$19.5 million against the Deputy Minister and three others accused of stealing his cell phone.
Chinotimba’s High Court application cites Mahlangu as the first respondent, Geraldine Phiri as the second, Patience Nyoni is the third and Malvern Chadamoyo the fourth defendant.
Chinotimba says the loss of his cell made him lose business amounting to more than US$19 million.
Meanwhile, Phiri and Nyoni who briefly appeared before a Harare Magistrate Wednesday facing theft charges, were remanded in custody and are expected to appear in court Friday.
The arrest of Mahlangu who is also the MP for Nkulumane comes in the wake of renewed persecution of MDC MPs and ministers.
At least seven MPs are facing trumped-up charges while the party’s Secretary-General and Minister of Finance, Hon Tendai Biti, on Tuesday received a letter with a bullet inside it.
